SUMMARY:TSO Open Rehearsal: Sea and Sky
LOCATION:Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, 222 S Copeland St, Tallahassee, FL 32304
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:A FREE open dress rehearsal for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra’s concer
t Sea and Sky!\n\nOpen Rehearsals are FREE to attend and do NOT require a t
icket for entry. Registering for a free ticket ensures that you receive a K
now Before You Go email with helpful information about the program, parking
, or any last-minute updates. Physical tickets will not be mailed unless re
quested. \n\nThe works on Maestro Wesley Schulz’s beautiful program are ins
pired by the sea and sky. Nielsen’s Helios Overture was written while the c
omposer was on holiday in Athens, and the music poetically depicts the sun
over the Aegean Sea. Similarly, the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius wrote hi
s optimistic Second Symphony while vacationing in an Italian coastal villag
 e. The touching work provided hope to the Finnish people while they fought
against Russian oppression, and it became a symbol of national pride. Torke
’s Sky Concerto, nominated for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Music and premier
ed by Tessa Lark (who also received a Grammy nomination for her recording o
f the work), is infused with references to Lark’s Kentucky roots and backgr
ound as bluegrass fiddler. Torke has written, “Just as when one looks up an
d sees the open expanse of the sky, I felt an openness when writing this pi
ece, a renewed freshness to putting notes together.”\n
