In January, 2016 the live oak, which was in poor health, was removed for public safety concerns. Realizing that the live oak is as much a part of the library as the books themselves, Leon County memorialized portions of the live oak through sculpture by local sculptor, John Birch. Over the course of six months, library patrons witnessed the live oak transform, seeing history being preserved through art.
